Collaboration & Leadership

Collection Development

Managing a collection is an important role of a Media Specialist.  It involves evaluating the current collection, researching  new resources and vendors, weeding, purchasing and then marketing the new resources.  This document was developing a plan for a solid reference collection.

Community Partnership

As a media specialist it is important to connect with community.  This summer program with the public library was a great way to establish a relationship with teen librarian and programs offered to teens.  I learned ways that I can support their programming and how the public library can support me in my role as a media specialist.  It is important to establish relationships with all stakeholders.

Collaboration

Wiki's are a great 21st century tool for collaboration.  Many classes at Kent State require collaborative work by classmates and the Web 2.0 tool of choice was a Wiki.  Integrating Technology into Research-Based Projects is a great example of collabortive project.  In which our goal was to strengthen
teaching and the student learning process, leading to improved student achievement.  We had a scenario in a school in which we were to focus on integrating technology into the classroom.  It has some great tools and strategies.  After using Wiki's in my Master's program I integrated them into a science encore class with a Wiki called Recycle This! and in a social studies classroom with Brother to Brother.  The recycling wiki was used as a place for students from quarter to quarter to build a place where the community could eventually come to find out about recycling and where to take it within our community.  (It was just used for 2 quaters before I left this school).  The social studies wiki was based on literature books that 8th grade students selected and collaborated on aspects of historical fiction during the civil war. All three of these wiki's were set up by me for purposes of collaboration.

District Inservice

An important role of the Media Specialist is to provide professional development in literature and technology.  I chose to collaborate with a teacher and present Web 2.0 tools for the district summer workshop for staff members.  This was a great workshop and the staff was great to work with. As a result of this inservice I got the opportunity to collaborative with several teachers and implement lessons using a web tool, Glogster, in the classroom.
