My name is Karen Reiber and I would like to welcome you to my portfolio. I would like to take this opportunity to share with you my passion and my vision.
This is a second career for me as I spent in 15 years in nursing--the last 12 in nursing education. I have always known that I wanted to be in education and eleven years ago I was asked to join the brand new middle school, Nagel, as a Media Center Facilitator. Here is where I fell back in love with reading, research and middle school students!
I was given full reign to develop the collection, circulation policies and day to day management of a school with 1200 7th and 8th graders. This experience was invaluable and gave me a great foundation when I started my Masters of Education program in Instructional Technology/Library Media with my initial licensure in the fall of 2007. I am glad that the staff at Kent State encouraged me to go the route of Instructional Technology because the job that I now have required a Media Specialist who could integrate technology. I took the advantage of being able to immediately apply skills I was learning in both the technology and library areas in my daily work.
I was a little leery about entering an online degree program as this was a new and 21st century way to learn. After my first tech class I was definitely hooked and found that I was able to balance my full time work schedule with a sometimes full time school schedule as well. I know that putting the theory behind my practice allowed my administrators to take notice of what I had to offer students, staff, parents and community stakeholders. I certainly credit my work experience and Kent State Master's program for providing me with the confidence and knowledge for securing my current job as Media Specialist with Wyoming City School District.
My vision statement: I believe as a Media Specialist that I can reach, educate, engage, inspire, respect, collaborate, grow and nurture the learner of the 21st century.
