Making the Match

Picture
Matching books to pre-teen and teen students is an art!  In order to make that happen it is important to be reading all the time.  I also find it helpful to be reading professional journals like LMC, Booklist, and VOYA.  Journal reviews expose a Media Specialist to a wide variety of resources.  Reading records in the YA Literature class happened in a blog.  In my literature blog, Reading Reiber's Blog you will find books that I read for class and I have kept it up, for the last two years so that I might share what I am reading with my students!

Webquests

Don't get Caught Songlifting is a WebQuest that I developed to help students think about intellectual property as an introduction to plagiarism.  A WebQuest is a great inquiry orientated activity for students based on Internet resources.  As a teacher we pose a problem to the students in a WebQuest and they gather information, work in groups and come up with a research based solution.

Instructional Design

Instructional design is essential to good lessons.  In this class we took an entire semester and developed a very detailed Instructional Design project.  This was done as a group project.  As you will note from our Wiki the essential elements are broken down into the following critical elements:  Needs Assessment, Instructional Analysis, Learner and Context Analysis, Performance Objectives, Student Assessment, Design Documents with Instructional Strategies, Instructional Materials and Formative Evaluation with Revisions.

Another collaborative project that I worked on was a Problem Based Learning Project that demonstrates design principles.  It was a history and technology lesson for freshman students.

Website

As a Instructional Technology Major I was required to develop a small instructional website.  My website was designed for teachers to use when needing a resource for Web 2.0 tools.  This was my first time using Dreamweaver program.  I know I learned a lot as I created this website but I found several times I could have used some background in html which would have made a smoother design process.  Although my website is very basic; the skills I have learned have come in very handy when working on school webpages and other Web 2.0 tools.  As a Media Specialist I will be expected to maintain a library/tech webpage and so I feel very well prepared to take that task on!

Designing Visuals

Designing visuals is very important skill that is needed by a Media Specialist.  Getting to know the basics was not as easy for an avid scrapbooker as I thought it would be when taking the Designing Visuals class at Kent State.  It is important to be marketing all aspects of me and my job.  Throughout my portfolio you will see exmples of my creative marketing and promoting,  Below see a slideshow of examples from my Visual Design Class.
